What Comes After Call of Duty: Ghosts?

The Call of Duty first-person shooter video game franchise has given us well over 40 separate titles in 20 years. This makes CoD one of the most iconic FPS series of all time.

With the number of games in the Call of Duty series, it isn’t easy to make sense of them all. And I often see one question: What games come after CoD Ghosts?

After Call of Duty: Ghosts which came out in 2013, there have been 16 new games, including Advanced Warfare, Black Ops III, Siege, Infinite Warfare, WWII, Black Ops IV, Modern Warfare, Vanguard, Modern Warfare II, Warzone 2.0, and more.

Below is a list of all Call of Duty games in chronological order, sorted by release date. 

Call of Duty (2003)

Released on October 29, 2003, the original Call of Duty game takes place during World War II.

Even in the first Call of Duty game, you can enjoy multiplayer and three story campaigns (British, American, and Soviet) on PC, Mac, and the N-Gage handheld device. 

Revolutionizing the FPS genre, CoD introduced AI characters that support the player throughout missions and respond to changes made in-game. 

Call of Duty: United Offensive (2004)

Call of Duty: United Offensive was an expansion pack for Call of Duty that was released on September 14, 2004. 

The expansion provided four new missions to the American and British Campaigns and an additional five missions to the Russian Campaign.

In terms of multiplayer content, it added 11 new maps to the 16 already present in the main game. 

Call of Duty: Finest Hour (2004)

Released on November 16, 2004, Call of Duty: Finest Hour takes the player across three campaigns during World War II.

In the first single-player campaign, you play as Aleksandr Sokolov before switching to Nikolai Badanov in the Soviet campaign. Once you have completed the Soviet missions, you move on to the British campaign. 

During this campaign, you will play Edward Carlyle before finishing the game as Chuck Walker in the American campaign. 

Call of Duty 2 (2005)

Unlike the previous games, Call of Duty 2 saw three different release dates: October 25, 2005, on PC, November 15, 2005, for Xbox 360, and May 26, 2006, on Mac OS X. 

The sequel to Call of Duty, it once again has three campaigns: the North African campaign, the Battle of Normandy, and Crossing the Rhine. 

Each campaign is split into smaller stories that follow specific soldiers during World War II as they overcome nearly impossible odds. 

Call of Duty 2: Big Red One (2005)

Call of Duty 2: Big Red One was released on November 1, 2005, and comes with a Prologue mission and three campaigns. 

The player will enjoy facing down enemy Axis soldiers in North Africa, Sicily, and Western Europe. 

Call of Duty 3 (2006)

Released on November 7, 2006, Call of Duty 3 maintains the franchise’s successful history of placing games during World War II. 

Instead of separate campaigns, the player will complete three Acts spanning America, Britain, France, Canada, and Poland. 

Call of Duty: Roads to Victory (2007)

Set in World War II, Call of Duty: Roads to Victory was released on March 14, 2007, and returns to the classic three single player campaign setup. 

The campaigns available to play are American, Canadian, and British, for 14 missions across the three campaigns. 

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007)

The first game in the franchise to leave World War II behind, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, was released on November 5, 2007.

In this game, the player will complete 21 missions across a Prologue, three Acts, and an Epilogue that are set up to follow a more film-like plot. You’ll be playing as Captain John Price (callsign Bravo Six), a member of the British special forces SAS.

Call of Duty: World at War (2008)

The first game in the Black Ops storyline, Call of Duty: World at War, was released on November 11, 2008. It takes place in the Eastern War Front and the Pacific theater of war. 

This is also the first game where the Nazi Zombies game co-op mode was first seen, and it would eventually become one of the top-played modes.

Call of Duty: World at War: Final Fronts (2008)

Call of Duty: World at War: Final Fronts is the PlayStation 2 version of CoD: World at War, but it comes with completely different missions. 

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)

The sequel to Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, was released on November 10, 2009. 

Five years after the events in the first Modern Warfare, the player will complete eighteen missions across three Acts. 

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Mobilized (2009)

Call of Duty Modern Warfare: Mobilized is the Nintendo DS version of Modern Warfare 2, though it continues the storyline from the first Nintendo DS Modern Warfare game. 

There are 16 missions the player can complete, though there are no separate campaigns and, instead, switches between America and Britain. 

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Reflex Edition (2009)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Reflex Edition is the Wii port of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and came out alongside the second Modern Warfare. 

There are a few minor differences between the game versions, but overall are the same in terms of campaign and plot.

Call of Duty: Zombies (2009)

Released on November 16, 2009, Call of Duty: Zombies was a game created featuring just the Nazi Zombies’ survival mode from CoD: World at War.

Call of Duty: Classic (2009)

Six years after Call of Duty was first released, Call of Duty: Classic was released as an Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 port. 

Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010)

Released on November 9, 2010, Call of Duty: Black Ops features a ton of game content that can be enjoyed in single or multiplayer. 

It comes with a singular American campaign mode where you play as CIA operative and ex-marine Alex Mason, but you can play either as America (main characters: Mason and Jason Hudson) or Russia (as Viktor Reznov). 

You can also enjoy the Zombie game mode in Black Ops if you just can’t get enough. 

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011)

The third and final game in the Modern Warfare storyline, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, was released on November 8, 2011. 

Once again taking place across three Acts, the player continues the story in exotic places like India, Somalia, and the Arabian Peninsula. 

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3: Defiance (2011)

Taking place story-wise several days before the console version of Modern Warfare 3, CoD: Modern Warfare 3: Defiance is the Nintendo DS port. 

It comes with its own set of missions for a total of 14 levels the player can complete, with the last one leading into the missions of CoD: Modern Warfare 3.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies (2011)

Another Nazi Zombies spin-off game, Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies (COD: BOZ), was released on December 1, 2011, on iOS and August 2012 for Android. 

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (2012)

The sequel to CoD: Black Ops, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, was released on November 12, 2012, and featured two separate arcs. 

During the first arc, the player completes missions from 1986 – 1989; the second takes place in 2025.

You also glimpse World War I, where zombies have overrun the world, although it mostly a flashback and not a mission you can play.

Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified (2012)

Released on November 13, 2012, Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified was released exclusively on the PlayStation Vita. 

It has ten single-player missions but received many negative reviews from game critics because of bugs and the short campaign. 

Call of Duty: Online (2013)

The predecessor to Mobile CoD, Call of Duty: Online, was released in 2013 as a free-to-play game with micro-transactions. 

It had an eight-year lifespan before being shut down in 2021 in favor of CoD: Mobile, which came out in 2019. 

Call of Duty: Strike Team (2013)

Another mobile game, Call of Duty: Strike Team, was released on September 5, 2013, for iOS and October 24, 2013, for Android. 

In this game, you control a squad whose task is to hunt down an unknown enemy that has declared war upon the United States. 

Call of Duty: Ghosts (2013)

Released on November 5, 2013, Call of Duty Ghosts is set ten years after the United States lost its Superpower status due to a devastating mass event. 

A new global power has risen, and the player fights alongside SpecOps to try to survive against an all-powerful enemy.

Call of Duty: Ghosts was developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (2014)

If you have grown tired of WWII and modern warfare games, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, released on November 3, 2014, features futuristic tech.

Players get an exoskeleton that can be upgraded and use hoverbikes, drones, energy weaponry, and more. 

Call of Duty: Heroes (2014)

Yet another mobile CoD game, Call of Duty: Heroes was released on November 26, 2014, and was removed on December 22, 2018. 

Instead of being a first-person shooter, it went the route of real-time strategy, much like how Class of Clans is structured. 

Call of Duty: Black Ops III (2015)

The third Black Ops game, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, was released on November 6, 2015, and is darker than many other games. 

The story in Black Ops 3 is darker than many other games and takes place in the distant future, in 2065, 40 years after the events of Black Ops 2. The world is miserable due to climate change, international conflicts, and technological advances.

You play as black ops soldiers with futuristic new weapons, and the game setting is a third cold war between global alliances.

Call of Duty: Siege (2016)

Released on October 14, 2016, in Australia only, Call of Duty: Siege is a free-to-play real-time strategy card game. 

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (2016)

A massive wargame, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, was released on November 4, 2016, and takes place on Earth and in the depths of space. 

You take on the role of Captain Nick Reyes, leading the remaining forces against the relentless forces of the Settlement Defense Front. 

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered (2016)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered was released on November 4, 2016, and is just the remastered version of CoD: Modern Warfare. 

Everything remains the same other than the visual and sound effects being enhanced thanks to the newer technology of modern-day. 

Call of Duty: WWII (2017)

Returning to its roots, Call of Duty: WWII was released on November 3, 2017, and occurs throughout a singular campaign. 

The player steps into the shoes of Ronald “Red” Daniels and his squad across the entire European War Front.  

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (2018)

Bringing back the popular Black Ops storyline, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was released on October 12, 2018. 

Instead of playing through a campaign, players can play some single-player Solo Missions alongside Multiplayer modes, Zombies, and a Battle Royale game mode named Blackout. 

Call of Duty: Mobile (2019)

The current main mobile CoD game, Call of Duty: Mobile, was released on October 1st, 2019, as free-to-play. 

Featuring dozens of multiplayer game modes, including Zombies, Battle Royale, and special rotational modes, it has surpassed over 650 million downloads. The game is online play only, meaning there are no offline modes against bots.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)

Returning to the beginnings of the Modern Warfare series, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a reboot of the 2007 game. 

It takes the characters – not at least Captain Price – from that game and places them into a modern light and a new campaign for the player to enjoy.

Call of Duty: Warzone (2020)

A free-to-play CoD game, Call of Duty: Warzone, was released on March 10th, 2020, and comes with three game modes. 

These game modes are a Plunder mode, a Battle Royale mode, and a Resurgence mode. Since its release, the game has risen to over 125 million active players and has a great replayability. 

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered (2020)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered was released on March 31, 2020, and is a remaster of the original CoD: Modern Warfare 2 campaign. 

There are no differences between the two; it is just a visual and audio remaster to make the game run better on modern technology. 

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (2020)

The latest game in the Black Ops storyline, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, was released on November 13th, 2020. 

Taking place during the Cold War, players will experience the tension that existed around the globe as they battle enemies in Turkey, Vietnam, Russia, and other exotic locations.

It also features cross-platform play.

Call of Duty: Vanguard (2021)

Yet another WWII CoD game, Call of Duty: Vanguard, was released on November 5th, 2021, and takes place globally. 

Players will get to take on missions in the Pacific Front, Eastern Front, Western Front, and North Africa. 

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022)

The sequel to the 2019 Modern Warfare reboot, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, was released on October 28th, 2022. 

Consisting of a single campaign with 17 missions, players will travel around the globe while battling against multiple factions like the Russian and Mexican Army. 

Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 (2022)

The latest game in the CoD franchise, Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 (aka Call of Duty Warzone Caldera), was released on November 16th, 2022. 

It is free-to-play and has several game modes, including Battle Royal, Unhinged, and DMZ, where players can roam around Al Mazrah.

In Closing

Few video games have been as successful for so many years as the Call of Duty franchise has.

I think one reason is that the developers combined single-player campaigns with online multiplayer modes from the start. Add to this well-implemented action-filled gameplay and great graphics, and you know why this series has succeeded for many years.
